An Exploration on Some Hot Issues in Mathematics Education in Mainland China

Abstract

In mainland China, "Chinese Mathematics Curriculum Standard for Full-time Compulsory Education (trial edition)" and "Senior High School Mathematics Curriculum Standard (trial edition)" have been issued by the Ministry of Education in 2001 and 2003 respectively and put it to experiments. On the one hand, the experiment yielded fruitful results and accumulated rich experience with the support of teachers in the experimental area; on the other hand, there still exist some urgent problems needing our attention. These issues are mainly related to: analysis and evaluation analyze and evaluate the effects of new curriculum; theory and practice of integrating information technology into Mathematics curriculum content; examples of designing new type of questions to meet the requirement of the New Curriculum; reforming the mathematics teacher education to promote the teachers to implement the new ideas and qualify them for the new content teaching; the characteristics of mathematics education in China and localization of the international mathematics education theories and the specific cases of integrating mathematics history into the curriculum. The author will outlined the main points of the some above issues and offer his views.
