Abstract

MathBlackBoard is a formula manipulation system which uses not only its own simple kernel but also some computer algebra systems as computational engine. A Characteristic of MathBlackBoard is its unique GUI operations. Mathematical expressions of MathBlackBoard are like icons of OS with GUI. Users can move expressions to anywhere in the screen of the system, by using drag and drop.

In this paper, we describe improved input-and-edit system for mathematical expressions. MathBlackBoard has been rebuilt from scratch. New MathBlackBoard has no GUI buttons to input characters and symbols. Mathematical expressions are inputted by new GUI operation which is manipulated by using pointing devices. We call this new GUI operation "dynaput." The origin of the operation's name is "dynamic input." The operation dynaput is quite different from handwriting recognitions. But it can create useful tools for pen-computing by cooperating with character recognitions.
